What’s the difference between Disciplinary and Grievance?

● Disciplinary procedures may be used by an employer to take action against an employee for poor conduct or performance.

● Grievance procedures may be used by an employee to complain about an aspect of their employment.

Why is it important to follow the correct Disciplinary and Grievance procedures?

Dealing with Grievances and Disciplinaries can be tricky. Procedures are in place to make sure that everyone is treated fairly during this difficult time. A clear cut framework of the rules means that complex issues can be dealt with as smoothly as possible.
It’s essential that you, as an employer, are compliant with employment legislation and the ACAS Code of practice on disciplinary and grievance matters.

What happens if I don’t follow the correct Disciplinary or Grievance procedure?

If you don’t follow the correct procedure, or rely on bad advice during a case, you may have to stand before an Employment Tribunal. As well as being an unpleasant experience for everyone involved, an Employment Tribunal could potentially cost your company a lot of time and money in the long run.
